Peter's father, MacNeill, who was born on the same day as John F Kennedy, 29th May 1917, has built up a world famous collection of whiskey, which is featured in People & Time magazines. He is also a well-known historian. He still serves in the pub to the delight of local customers. Peter was faced with having to modernise this much loved interior in order that the pub would comply with current health and safety regulations and so chose Angela Murphy Design Associates. The interior was carefully removed prior to the structural works being carried out. The pub was enlarged, toilet block and cold room built and the interior repaired and reinstated exactly as was. The new areas are built of salvaged materials and blend in with the original interior. MacNeill and the locals alike are delighted with the results, as they believed it could not be done. An annual visitor to the area who was shocked to find building work going on, screeched their car to a halt in the middle of the street, jumped out exclaiming; 'Oh no, they're not changing it are they?' ' Having viewed it they declared; 'Thank God it hasn't changed!'. O'Loclainn's features in The Sunday Tribune top 100 Irish pubs, 2/8/98, where Mike Hogan of In Dublin states '...it was recently renovated and they have done a mega-job, which is the exception to the rule as pubs usually make a mess'. |
